Monstera obliqua “Peruvian”

One of the ultimate ‘Unicorn Plants’.

It has been often written that they have “more empty space than leaf” and whilst this is correct for this Monstera obliqua Peru form, it is not true for them all obliqua.

The two forms we curently grow are – Monstera olbiqua ‘Peru’ also named the Peruvian form which does have these amazing leaves that are more holes (fenestrations) then leaf. And we also grow Monstera olbiqua ‘Amazonica’ which has very few holes.

One of the main differences between adansonii and obliqua is that the obliqua forms runners which is a long stem without leaf. And with the Monstera obliqua “Peruvian” there is definetly very little leaf and lots more holes in comparison to Monstera adansonii.

I have read many accounts that these plants need special conditions HOWEVER we have now been growing them for 2 years and our experience is that they grow just the same as the Monstera adansonii. We grow them just the same as the adansonii and albos.

They need regular water but allow the top third of the pot to dry before re-watering. Don’t allow water to sit in the saucer.

It is documented that they need high humidity (80% plus) but growing here they seem quite happy to tolerate 60% which is about our average. And the humidity fluctuates from 40% to 90% with no detriment to the Monstera obliquas.

And again I’m told they won’t tolerate the cold HOWEVER ours regularly get below 10C and at times below 6C in winter with no ill effects (which is much colder than most homes will get).

After much experimentation we have found that they grow best up a totem. We recomend an ironbark totem if you can find otherwise a moss pole. Just be sure to water your moss pole from the top to keep it moist.
