Monstera hybrid “Uno”™
Monstera “Uno”™ is Neil’s latest hybrid and it’s been a journey to get to this point.
Firstly, it is a hybrid between M. adansonii var laniata X M. deliciosa var borsigiana (aka Laniata X Albo). And it’s a “textbook” intermediate between the two parents.
The journey starts late at night in Spring 2020, when Neil spends every night checking his Monsteras for flowers and propagating when the opportunity arises. Over the Spring and Sumer of 2020, he pollinates many Laniata flowers with pollen from the Albo – but nothing sticks.
Not to be deterred he tries again in 2021. This time Neil is thrilled to see a Laniata flower develop into a fruit with ‘bumps’. Bumps are good, they are an indication of possible seeds.
So, on Sunday the 28th February 2022 the long anticipated fruit is picked. There was a buzz of excitement as Neil & Lisa pulled the fruit apart… but all we found was 1 Seed.
Usually when breeding, you have hundreds of seeds. You grow them and pick the best plant – not all will be strong, not all will be attractive. So, with just one seed, it was against the odds.
Neil, ever the optimist, put the seed in a pot and proceeded to germinate and care for that one seed. And that is how Monstera “Uno” came into existence. As it grew we realised it was pretty special – an attractive blend of both parent plants.
When large and strong, Uno was propagated with cuttings and now we have several of them and they are looking for new homes.
Be one of the first plant collectors to have a UNO™. Initial Release at the Qld Garden Expo 4-7 July 2024 and then will be made available online.
Happy Growing
